Over the past five weeks, Xpress Labels had the pleasure of welcoming Charlie Ball—a local business student and son of our colleague David Ball—as he embarked on a hands-on work experience journey across every department of our company. Work experience offers students a variety of benefits that can positively impact their academic and professional future.
Practical Skills:
During his five weeks at Xpress Labels, Charlie rotated through Sales, Production, Accounts, and Warehouse, gaining hands-on exposure to the daily operations of a busy manufacturing company. For example, in Sales, he observed client communications and learned how effective teamwork and clear communication keep orders running smoothly. In Production, he saw first-hand how time management and problem-solving are essential for meeting tight deadlines and maintaining quality standards—skills that are often only developed in real workplace environments like our Flexographic printing company.
Increased Employability:
Charlie’s experience at Xpress Labels has given him a competitive edge for future job applications. By working alongside experienced professionals and contributing to meaningful tasks across departments, he demonstrated initiative and adaptability—qualities that employers value highly. Having practical business experience on his CV not only sets him apart from peers but also shows his commitment to developing his career in the industry.

Confidence Boost:
Taking on real responsibilities—such as assisting with stock management in the Warehouse or supporting the Accounts team with data entry—helped Charlie build confidence in his abilities. Engaging with colleagues from different departments and successfully completing assigned tasks has prepared him for the transition from college to the workplace, making him more self-assured and independent.
Academic Relevance:
Charlie was able to connect his business studies coursework to real-world applications. For example, concepts like supply chain management and customer service, which he studied in class, came to life as he observed how Xpress Labels coordinates production schedules and ensures client satisfaction. This practical context deepened his understanding of how academic theories are applied in a fast-paced business environment.

Personal Growth:
Navigating the challenges of a professional setting—such as adapting to new tasks each week and collaborating with different teams—helped Charlie develop resilience, responsibility, and professionalism. He also gained a fresh perspective on potential career paths, discovering new interests within the business that may shape his future choices. Experiences like these are key to personal growth and help young people become well-rounded, work-ready individuals.
By welcoming Charlie, Xpress Labels not only supported his development but also reinforced its commitment to nurturing local talent and investing in the next generation of industry professionals
