Sustainable Labels

Definition of sustainable labels.

Xpress Labels is proud to offer sustainable labels that are not only environmentally friendly but also meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. Sustainable labels are manufactured using materials and processes that have a minimal impact on our planet. These labels are characterised by their eco-friendly materials, which include organic cotton, recycled polyester, and rock paper.

Sustainable labels can be made from organic cotton. Making this material an excellent choice for businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprint. Organic cotton is grown without the use of synthetic chemicals, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms. This not only helps to preserve soil health but also protects the health of farmers working in cotton agriculture.

To ensure the sustainability of our paper labels, we hold certifications from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). These certifications guarantee that the paper used in our labels comes from responsibly managed and sustainable forests.

By choosing our sustainable labels, businesses contribute to the circular economy. This concept involves designing, producing, and using products in a way that ensures resources are kept in use for as long as possible. Our eco-friendly labels not only reduce waste but also promote recycling and the use of renewable materials.

Importance of sustainable labels in the current market.

One of the key factors that makes sustainable labels essential is their contribution to reducing both wood and water pollution. Labels made from unsustainable sources, such as virgin paper or plastic, require significant amounts of wood pulp and water for their production. This leads to deforestation and water scarcity, contributing to environmental degradation. By opting for sustainable labels, businesses can minimise their impact on these precious resources, helping to preserve forests and protect water sources.

Moreover, sustainable labels serve as a powerful marketing tool for brands wishing to showcase their commitment to environmental responsibility. By incorporating sustainable labelling practices into their packaging, businesses can portray themselves as environmentally conscious and appeal to the growing number of eco-conscious consumers. Consumers are increasingly seeking products from companies that prioritize sustainable practices, and sustainable labels can help brands establish a loyal customer base.

Certifications such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) provide assurance that labels are sourced from responsibly managed forests. These certifications verify that the labels meet strict environmental, social, and economic standards, ensuring their sustainability.

By working with suppliers that have obtained certifications like FSC and PEFC, printing companies can demonstrate their dedication to responsible sourcing. Incorporating by-products like bagasse, old PE packaging and grass into label production further enhances their eco-friendliness. As the demand for sustainable products continues to rise, investing in sustainable labels is not only an ethical choice but also a smart business move in the current market.

Raw materials that can be used.

In the world of label production, raw materials play a crucial role not only in creating visually appealing and durable labels but also in promoting sustainability. By carefully selecting and utilizing sustainable raw materials, Xpress Labels strives to contribute towards a greener future.

Types of Raw Materials Used:

1. Recycled HDPE: High-density polyethylene (HDPE), derived from post-consumer plastic waste, offers exceptional strength and durability while significantly reducing environmental impact. By repurposing plastic materials, we support the circular economy and minimise the consumption of virgin resources.

2. Cotton: Sourced from sustainable cotton farms, this naturally renewable and biodegradable material provides a soft and versatile base for labels. Cotton showcases excellent printing performance and can be easily recycled or composted, contributing to waste reduction.

3. Sugarcane: Utilising sugarcane-based materials allows us to create labels that are not only visually captivating but also environmentally friendly. Sugarcane fibres are a renewable resource and their utilisation in label production minimises the emission of greenhouse gases, aiding in the fight against climate change.

4. Limestone: An innovative alternative to traditional paper-based labels, limestone-based labels present a greener option. Made from calcium carbonate, a natural and abundant mineral, limestone labels require significantly less water and energy during production. Additionally, their high durability ensures extended product lifespan and reduced waste.

5. Grape Waste: Transforming a by-product of the wine industry into a valuable raw material, grape waste labels showcase our commitment to sustainability. Grape waste, derived from grape skins and stalks, can be easily processed and transformed into eco-friendly labels, mainly for sheet fed printing processes,  that are biodegradable and compostable.

6. Grass fibres: Sun dried hay has been used in the wider packaging industry since 2017 and is now available for label stock. The material is free from allergens that are subject to EU identification labelling requirements as listed in Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011. read more here: Grass labels (herma.com)
